This week we’re sharing a simple, yet often overlooked, technique to accomplishing your BIG dreams and goals: Write It Down!
Could it be the reason you’re not hitting your goals is because you haven’t given yourself enough time, space or even permission to plan them out? I’m sure you know, it’s one thing to set goals, and it’s a whole other thing to actually reach them. And wouldn’t it be so great to be on the other side of having the vision or idea and actually making it happen? One of the things that can help you reach your goals is to write them out – either on paper the “classic” way or using note taking app on your computer or mobile device. Did you know that writing (or typing) things out actually helps your mind focus on what you are saying you want to do? Anything worth doing is worth taking the time to plan it out. Don’t you agree?
11 Highly Effective Goal Tracking Apps & Tools
Take a look at these apps and tools to help you not only set your goals, but also set up tasks so you actually get them done. These tools will help you keep track of your progress as you TAKE ACTION towards your BIG dreams. Let’s go!
More On These Goal Tracking Tools
Toodledo’s app is very user friendly. It’s great for setting reminders and allows you to break your goal into smaller action steps as tasks – this keeps you on track, but what I like most is that it helps you plan better because each task also has a time and a date for completion. One too many uncompleted tasks, and you will soon find out whether or not you need to give yourself more time to finish a certain task. The interface could use some upgrading, but overall, I like this tool a lot – it’s simple, straight forward and lets you get in and get out so you can get to work.
Stickk’s goal tracking tool allows you to set up what they call “Commitment Contracts” where you can write your goals as commitments that you keep personal to hold yourself accountable or you can share with others and allow them to see your goals and hold you accountable. You can share your goals and progress on social media as well as add images and text to your commitment journal to make your goal tracking more interactive. This tool is great if you who want to invite others to be a part of the process and progress. Stickk also has a way to up the ante with “stakes”. Stakes are money that you can add to your commitment as an even higher reward or incentive. It’s kind of like betting on yourself – metaphorically speaking, of course.
The Goal Buddy tracking tool is a great companion tool to use with the Zig Ziglar 7-Step Strategy for Goal Setting we shared last week. The app has a section for you to list out the benefits and rewards for your goal, which is a nice plus. When you set up your goals, you can assign tasks and set deadlines for each task. This tool also allows you to share your goals with others who are also using the Goal Buddy app. What’s nice is you can also make your goals and tasks private, since not all goals should be shared with everyone.
Mind Mapping Your Goals – The Oldie but Goodie Brainstorming Tool
I have a confession – I’m semi obsessed with mind maps. I use them for just about everything – planning out my blog post topics, making important decisions, organizing & mapping out all of my programs and webinars. I absolute love them (but not as much as my coffee – everything in its place, right?). The reason I like to use mind maps is it helps me to see how all the parts and smaller tasks of my goals are linked and interconnected. Mind mapping also helps you separate tasks into buckets or pockets that you can drill down into bite-size, doable steps. They’re great for giving yourself a visual at-a-glance view of your goals so you can see how it all comes together.
I like to use good old fashioned pen and paper to mind map, but I have used several online tools that work great too. Here are a few that work well and are simple to use:
- MindMaple.com (free)
- Bubbl.us (free)
- MindMup.com (free)
- xMind.net (free, upgrade for premium options)
- MindMeister.com (free for 3 maps, then subscription; great for teams)

The Power of Visualizing Yourself Reaching Your Goal
Last week we talked about how to set actionable goals, using 7 steps for goal setting outlined by Zig Ziglar. One of the things that I do when I’m mapping out my goals this way is spend a little more time on step 2. That’s the step where you get to list the benefits or rewards for reaching that goal or accomplishment. This is my favorite part because I can actually visualize myself reaching the goal. Many times just thinking about the benefit is just the motivation you’ll need to not only make a plan, but also allow your mind to see it, touch it and feel what it would be like to cross the finish line and get it done. What motivates you when it comes to taking action to accomplish our big dreams? I challenge you and encourage you to write it out and make a plan.
Go ahead and Dream BIG. Then use the tools we shared here and give yourself both time and permission to stop and actually think through your big dreams, give them a deadline and go for it!
